Background

May 2010 will see the grand opening of Norrköping Visualization Center. A dome theater, exhibitions focusing on the latest visualization research, cinema, media pedagogy programs, conference facilities, research and production laboratories as well as a café are some of the activities you will find at the centre.

The decade-long visualization research being conducted by Linköping University, which today is regarded in world-class terms, was the starting point for investment in Norrköping Visualization Center. The idea for a meeting place encompassing visualization has existed for a while and the ambition to create a strong link between university research and students has always been important. The first step in the center’s evolution was taken in 2000 with the formation of Norrköping’s Visualization and Interaction Studio (NVIS).  The studio comprises an experience laboratory and a virtual reality theater which has acted as a prototype for the future visualization centre. Before the building work began, an investigation exploring the prerequisites for an expansion into a bigger a more publically-accessible arena was conducted. What would the benefits of such an expansion be? Which financial, human resource and building issues are there and how do the cooperation and financing possibilities look?  The conditions proved favorable and the project launched into the construction phase which is now in full swing. The center is a result of a close collaboration between the Municipality of Norrköping, Linköping University, Norrköping Science Park and the Interactive Institute.
